How to read a bike geometry chart: stack, reach, and choosing the right size

"What size bike fits me?" is probably the most common question in cycling — and the one where the usual answers ("at your height, a 54") are the most misleading. The reason: size labels are not standardized. A "54" from one brand can be longer and lower than a "56" from another. The only correct way to compare frames is the geometry chart — and it's easier to read than it looks.

The two numbers that matter most

Stack — the height: the vertical distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube. It tells you how high the handlebar can sit without tricks.

Reach — the length: the horizontal distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the same point. It tells you how long the frame actually is, regardless of what the label says.

Why these two beat everything else: both are measured from the bottom bracket — the fixed point of your pedaling position — and neither depends on tube shapes. The "effective" top tube length, the old comparison metric, is distorted by the seat tube angle; stack and reach don't have that problem.

The stack-to-reach ratio gives you the frame's character at a glance: above ~1.55 = relaxed, endurance geometry; around 1.45–1.50 = sporty road; below ~1.45 = aggressive, race-oriented. (Orientative thresholds for road bikes; MTB and gravel follow different logic.)

Why your height isn't enough

Manufacturers' "height → size" tables assume average proportions. Two people who are both 178 cm (5'10") can have inseams of 80 and 88 cm — the first has a long torso (needs more reach, moderate stack), the second long legs (lots of seatpost, less reach). The same size label will fit them completely differently.

The correct approach inverts the problem: first establish your target position (the angles at which your body pedals well), then look for frames whose geometry allows it with reasonable components — a stem between 80 and 120 mm, spacers within the fork's limit, the saddle in the middle zone of its rails. A frame that "fits" is one that reaches your position with normally sized parts, not with a 140 mm stem flipped upside down.

How to compare two bikes concretely

  1. Open both geometry charts at the candidate sizes (matched by stack/reach, not by label).
  2. A reach difference under ~5 mm = absorbable through lever position; 5–15 mm = one stem step; over ~20 mm = effectively a different size.
  3. A stack difference under ~10 mm = absorbable with spacers; more = a different position category.
  4. Check the seat tube angle: at differences above 1°, the same saddle position requires a different seatpost offset.
  5. Check the stock crank length — if it differs, your knee angle will change at the same saddle height.

I'm exactly between two sizes. Which do I choose?

Practical rule: choose by reach, because stack is easier to adjust (spacers) than reach (stems have limits). Longer torso/arms → the larger size; long legs with a short torso → the smaller size.

Is "endurance" geometry for beginners?

It's for anyone who wants a higher position and more stable handling — including riders with decades of experience. The label describes the geometry, not the skill level.
